The Natalie G. Heineman Smart Love Preschool

Thank you to all who made our first annual Garden Harvest Reception a success! Over 40 guests were in attendance, and enjoyed tours of the preschool gardens by Farmer Billy Burdett as well as heard from him about the garden curriculum. The music of The Lantern Kickers provided a lively backdrop to the evening, and the food by Big Delicious Planet—with ingredients harvested directly from the Preschool Garden the previous day—was a delicious smash hit. In total, the event generated over $5200 for the Preschool’s garden curriculum. We are so grateful to our generous sponsors (listed below), committee members and friends for making this event possible and for supporting Smart Love.

Smart Love’s Preschool Garden Program:
The children’s garden offers abundant opportunities for play-based learning and seed to table curriculum. The children see how plants grow and make connections to themselves and the world around them. They use the fruits and vegetables from the garden in their snacks and learn about nutrition. Our garden program is overseen by Billy Burdett, whom the preschoolers fondly call “Farmer Billy.” Hands-on learning in the garden and the season-extending greenhouse as well as in the classroom (seeds starts, worm bed, and garden activities) takes place all year long. As children work together to create, maintain and enjoy their school garden, they are exposed to concepts such as symbiotic relationships of plants and animals, solar energy, plant lifecycles, photosynthesis, cooperation, environmental stewardship and ecological awareness.
